SCORESHEET

October 15th 2010, Mumbai: Raju Ali Mollah of Kolkata achieved his first professional win when he finished one stroke ahead of another Kolkata golfer Shankar Das in the final round of the Aircel PGTI Players Championship presented by The Willingdon Sports Club.

Raju Ali Mollah (63-57-58-64) finished with an overall score of 18 under 242 after he posted a steady one under 64 in round four. Raju was in excellent hitting form on the front nine as he drove the greens on the par-four fifth and ninth holes to pick up birdies. He was two under at the turn and led by three strokes from nearest rival Shankar Das.

Raju was in some trouble when his second shot on the 11th went out of bounds and led to a bogey. Shankar at the same time birdied the 11th to close the gap to one stroke. The turning point was the par-three 13th hole where Raju landed his tee shot within four feet to earn a birdie. Shankar dropped a bogey on the same hole and Raju once again led by three strokes.

Shankar pulled one back with a birdie on the 15th after his chip found the edge of the hole only to lip-out. There was a minor hiccup for the mild-mannered Raju on the 17th where he hit a poor chip shot and missed a three feet putt to end up with a bogey. Raju finally held on to his one-stroke lead with a par on the 18th to secure a well-deserved win.

Raju thus climbed from 22nd place to ninth position on the 2010 Rolex Rankings.

Raju said, “I have waited a long time for this win since it’s my first in my 15-year-old professional career. My hard work has finally paid-off. I was confident of driving home the advantage at the start of the round but I knew it was important for me to keep my nerve. I have been in contention on several occasions in the past but was never able to produce a solid final round when it mattered the most. I think I have been able to reverse that trend in this tournament. This win has given me self-belief and I will now play without any pressure whenever I’m in contention.

“I putted really well today. I came very close to making an eagle on the fifth and from there on I got the momentum. The 13th was the turning point for me as the gap between me and Shankar increased to three strokes on that hole. I felt the pressure on the 17th but then came back well with a steady par on the 18th to close it out.”

Shankar Das (60-59-62-62) fired a three under 62 to finish second at 17 under 243. His final round was punctuated by six birdies and three bogeys.

“I knew I would fare well at this venue since this course suits my game. I’m delighted to post the best finish of my professional career. However, I just hope I had made a better start to the round. I made bogeys on the first two holes and could never recover thereafter,” said Shankar.

Manav Jaini (63-62-59-60) of Delhi fired six birdies and two bogeys in his round of five under 60 that helped him finish third at 16 under 244. Jaini also booked a berth for the Barclays Singapore Open as he climbed from eighth to sixth on the Rolex Rankings.

Vinod Kumar finished fourth at 15 under 245 while Mukesh Kumar and Pappan shared fifth place at 13 under 247.

Ashok Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, Shamim Khan and Manav Jaini were the four PGTI members who sealed their spots for the US$ 6 million Barclays Singapore Open after the conclusion of the Aircel PGTI Players Championship presented by The Willingdon Sports Club. The four PGTI members sealed their berths for the blue-riband event of the Asian region by virtue of being the top four players on the Rolex Rankings besides those who are exempt and excluding Anirban Lahiri who made it to Singapore as a result of being the 2009 Rolex Rankings champion.
