Kiradech Aphibarnrat redeemed himself with a second round three-under 69 at the Players Championship on Friday, a 15-shot improvement following a disastrous opening 84. But Friday's impressive score was not enough for the Thai to reach the weekend rounds.
Kiradech, the first Thai to hold a PGA Tour card, made six birdies at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, including one on the par-three 17th hole which has proven to be a bane in two appearances in the tour's flagship event.
Jon Rahm felt like every shot would be good and most of them were Saturday as he posted an 8-under 64 and built a one-shot lead over Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood at THE PLAYERS Championship.
Five shots behind going into the third round, Rahm shot 30 on the back nine at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course and surged into the lead when McIlroy and Fleetwood couldn't keep pace. His only bogey was on the sixth hole, and even that landed next to the pin until running over the back.
The leaderboard was dominated by the Europeans with no Americans featuring in the top five. Spain's long-hitting Jon Rahm shot a blistering 64 pushing him one shot ahead of co-overnight leaders Tommy Fleetwood (70) and Rory McIlroy (70) in the USD 12.5 million tournament.
Australia's Jason Day (68) will enter Sunday's final round three back while Mexican Abraham Ancer (70) is fifth, a further shot back of the leader.
Tiger Woods who had a quadruple on Par-3 17th in second round shot a birdie in third and that from two feet, but he managed only a 72, though he smiled and joked with playing partner Kevin Na.
The round did include one light-hearted moment indicative of Woods' newfound lightheartedness on the course.
After his playing partner Kevin Na was a bit over-eager to pick his birdie putt out of the hole on the island green 17th, Woods poked fun by mimicking that same motion.
