Recently the Indian Golfing star- Anirban Lahiri finished 2nd at the 2023 LIV Golf Adelaide with two strokes behind the leader, Talor Gooch.
However, recently he was striked out of the top 100 list in the world rankings, but soon he rose to 91st after finishing second in the Vietnam event which made him stand chances of qualifying for the PGA Championship.
The PGA Championship 2023 is taking place at Oak Hill Country Club this weekend i,e. 18th-21st May 2023. The PGA Championship is the only major tournament that does not officially invite the top 50 OWGR players but enables the top 100 who did not get an invitation to compete in the tournament.
The PGA Championship Trophy
It was a call-up the India star, who will also turn out at the Asian Games later this year in China, was waiting for. As LIV Golf doesn’t have any official ranking points , it needed a finish ata second place on the Asian Tour’s International Series Vietnam event which took place last month to regain the lost ground.
That display took him from outside the top 100 to 95th place, virtually guaranteeing his entry to the PGA Championship, where he has a tied fifth finish, the best by an Indian golfer at a major back in 2015.
Anirban Lahiri has been in the list of best finishing India in many Majors to have a creditable run till date. He has made a total of 17 appearances so far making the cut at the Masters in 2015 and 2016, at the Open ( 2012, 2015, 2016) and twice at the PGA Championship.
At the initial weekend rounds at the US Open three times ( 2015, 2016, 2019) he was not able to perform.
Last year, when this 35- year old signed up with LIV Golf, he had two second place finishes including one at his first event in Boston. He had also won the team event under Crushers at the season-opener in Mayakoba, Mexico this year.
As if to celebrate the invite, Lahiri returned a bogey-free 67 at Singapore’s Sentosa Golf Club, a first for him, to help the Bryson DeChambeau-led team to third place in the LIV event.
Just ahead of the Asian Tour tournament at Cam Ranh, Lahiri flew home to be with his ailing mother-in-law, who subsequently lost her battle with cancer last week. Anirban got into a hard time when his mother-in-law passed away, while he was playing at LIV Golf Adelaide.
He plans to spend the two weeks ahead of the PGA Championship in India.
