STORY BY AKSH GUPTA
WATCH NOW: Dinesh Thakur's journey from a young athlete to entrepreneur and sports-property visionary.
Meet Dinesh Thakur, known to many as Danny, the entrepreneur behind 4moles.com and the vision behind GRPL - The Royal Trial of India. His ambition is to build golf's biggest sports property, with a belief that GRPL can reach a valuation of INR 500 crore within the next five years.
But before GRPL, before 4moles.com and before the business ventures, there was a young boy growing up in an Army family, moving from city to city, excelling in sport and learning one lesson that would eventually define his life: adapt, compete and keep moving forward.
Born in Jammu on 8 November 1973, Dinesh was the eldest of three children and grew up in a three-generation Rajput Dogra defence family.
His father, Colonel Krishna Chandra, was a distinguished Indian Army paratrooper. His grandfather, Colonel Dina Nath, is remembered in the family for having hoisted the first Indian flag in Kashmir alongside Maharaja Hari Singh.
But Dinesh's story was never simply about inheriting a legacy.
An Army childhood meant constantly moving from one place to another. Agra. Hyderabad. Shillong. Udhampur. Different cities, different schools and constantly changing surroundings meant learning to adapt from an early age.
That constant movement would become an important part of his personality: constantly adapting, constantly starting again.
Dinesh's years at Scindia School, Gwalior, became an important chapter in his development. Academically steady, he found his real calling on the sporting field.
He took on leadership responsibilities as a School Prefect, Horse-Riding Captain and Athletics Captain, while establishing himself as one of the school's strongest athletes. He was regarded as one of the fastest runners and one of the longest-distance runners in the school and went on to win the Best Athlete award for three consecutive years, along with records that, according to his story, remain unbroken.
Young Dinesh Thakur (4th from left) during his formative years at Scindia School, Gwalior.
Scindia was more than a school for Dinesh. It was where competition, leadership and discipline became part of his identity.
This was where the fighter was born.
After Scindia, Dinesh moved to Hyderabad for his graduation while pursuing a very different dream: flying.
He worked summer jobs to earn his own pocket money, trained with NCC Flying and spent his free time dirt biking. It was also during this period, at Bolarum Golf Course in Secunderabad, that he first picked up a golf club.
But golf was not the dream then. Flying was.
Dinesh cleared the Air Force examinations and physical tests. Then came the medical clearance.
He did not clear it.
The dream of becoming a pilot ended there. Ground duty was offered as an alternative, but Dinesh chose not to take it.
He said no. And started again.
It was his first major lesson in dealing with a closed door: when one path disappeared, he would have to create another.
Dinesh went on to Symbiosis, Pune, for his first postgraduate degree in Marketing and International Trade. While studying, he also worked as an intern with Motorola Pagers.
In 1995, he joined Airtel as a Management Trainee in Marketing. Alongside his corporate career, he pursued a second postgraduate degree from Amity University.
His career progressed steadily. By 1998, he had become an Assistant Manager, and by the time he moved on from the organisation, he had risen to Senior Manager.
The boy whose Air Force dream had collapsed was rising again, this time in corporate India.

His career then moved into international business and the Middle East, working with major names in the telecom industry. The trajectory continued upward, and by the age of 35, Dinesh had reached the position of Managing Director of a multinational, earning approximately INR 70–80 lakh a year.
For many, that would have represented the destination. For Dinesh, it represented a ceiling.
In 2008, at the peak of his corporate career, Dinesh had a new home in Gurgaon, a young family and a professional position that many would have considered highly successful.
Yet he chose to leave it.
He resigned and started Goldfish Technologies, focusing on mobile advertising networks.
It was a decision that came without the certainty that normally accompanies a senior corporate career. Friends stopped answering. Colleagues and family questioned the decision and, according to Dinesh's account, some even considered him a madman for walking away from a secure career.
There were no investors waiting to fund the next chapter.
There was no safety net. There was simply a decision to build something of his own.
Golf was not part of the original plan.
Six months after starting Goldfish Technologies, with investors still nowhere in sight, Dinesh identified an opportunity that he believed nobody else was building at the time: a platform bringing together media, technology and commerce for golf.
In October 2009, 4moles.com was born.
The early years were far removed from the scale of the business today. Four employees operated 4moles.com from the terrace of Dinesh's home. Revenue was almost negligible, and the uncertainty continued.
Dinesh during The early days of 4moles.com, built from his home terrace with a four-member team.
There were moments when returning to corporate life seemed like the easier option. But he stayed.
From 2009 to 2017, the business was built through years of uncertainty, experimentation and persistence. Nine years passed between the launch of 4moles.com and the next major turning point.
Then, in 2018, investors backed the vision.
The first office was established. The ecosystem began to expand. The company entered a new phase of growth, and for a while, it appeared that the difficult early years were finally behind it.
Then came another fall.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought businesses across industries to a standstill, and 4moles.com was hit as well Investors walked away. The business was down again.
For Dinesh, however, this was not an entirely unfamiliar experience.
He had already experienced what it meant to lose a path, walk away from certainty and rebuild from the ground up.
Fall. Rebuild. Rise.
That cycle would repeat itself once again.
In 2022, Dinesh rebuilt 4moles.com with additional golf services, technology and a stronger vision for the future.
The business evolved beyond being simply a golf media platform, developing a broader ecosystem around golf, including technology, events, services and experiences.
The setbacks had not changed the ambition. If anything, they had added another layer of experience to it.
And from that accumulated experience came the next and perhaps most ambitious idea yet - GRPL.
Today, Dinesh's next major bet is GRPL, the Golf Rendezvous Pro-Am League, positioned as The Royal Trial of India.
At a time when India is witnessing the rise of city-based sports leagues, franchises and new sports properties, Dinesh believes golf deserves its place in that movement.
GRPL brings together city-based franchises, professional and amateur golfers and a season-long competitive format designed to take golf beyond the traditional tournament model.
For Dinesh, however, GRPL is not simply another business venture.
It represents the accumulated experience of everything that came before it: the corporate years, the decision to leave them, the uncertainty of building Goldfish Technologies, the birth and growth of 4moles.com, the years of operating from a home terrace, the arrival of investors, the setback of COVID and the decision to rebuild once again.
GRPL is the latest chapter of a life built around starting again.

There is a common thread running through Dinesh Thakur's journey. The Air Force dream ended with a medical clearance.
He started again. The certainty of corporate India was left behind.
He started again. The early years of entrepreneurship brought uncertainty, a lack of investors and almost no revenue. He stayed and built again.
When COVID disrupted the business and investors walked away, he rebuilt 4moles.com.
And now, with GRPL, he is attempting to build something on a much larger sporting canvas.
More than four decades of experience, failures, lessons and learning have come together in one vision.
His philosophy is simple:
“What is written in destiny will not work until you work for it.”
Dinesh Thakur's story is not simply a story of success. It is a story of rise, fall and rebuild.
There was the rise through sport at Scindia School. The first fall when his dream of flying ended. The rise through corporate India. The decision to walk away from a ₹70–80 lakh career. The uncertain years of entrepreneurship. The emergence of 4moles.com. The investment and growth. The fall during COVID. The rebuilding of 4moles.com. And now, the ambition of GRPL.
He has been rejected. He has been doubted. He has taken risks. He has started again. And every time, he chose to move forward.
Some people spend their lives trying not to fall. Dinesh learned something else: you don't have to be afraid of falling if you know how to rise.
That is Dinesh Thakur. The Man Who Never Gives Up.
And with GRPL, his next chapter has only just begun.
