Indian golf fans are in for an exciting start to 2025, with the country set to host a reigning Major champion on its fairways for the first time since the sport’s introduction by the British in 1829. Bryson DeChambeau, who clinched the US Open title at Pinehurst No. 2 in June, is all but confirmed to appear in the inaugural International Series India. Expected to run from January 30 to February 2, the event will mark India’s debut in the Asian Tour’s elevated International Series, a LIV Golf-backed initiative launched in 2022.

While the official announcement of the tournament is yet to be made, the International Series India was already a popular topic of conversation at the recent International Series Thailand held at Thai Country Club, as well as at the Hero Women’s Indian Open hosted at the DLF Golf & Country Club, where the upcoming Indian event is also set to be held.

Real estate powerhouse DLF is anticipated to be the presenting sponsor, and the tournament promises to bring some big names from the LIV Golf lineup. The proximity of New Delhi to Riyadh, where LIV Golf’s 2025 season kicks off a week later, is likely to attract players seeking competitive rounds with minimal time zone adjustments. The prize pool is expected to be set at a minimum of $2 million, adding to the allure of the event.

DeChambeau expressed his enthusiasm about potentially competing in India, a destination he has yet to experience. In Dallas during the LIV Team Championship, he shared, "Anirban (Lahiri) has been talking to me about it. It’s an exciting opportunity for him, and I’m thrilled about the prospect of playing there." DeChambeau's team, the Crushers—comprised of Lahiri, Paul Casey, and Charles Howell III—is also likely to attend, adding to the high-caliber lineup for the Indian series.

Anirban Lahiri, who has been with LIV Golf since its inception in 2022 and is India’s only contracted player in the league, underscored the significance of DeChambeau’s potential participation. "Bryson has brought millions of new fans to golf, both through his unconventional style and his presence on social media," said Lahiri, highlighting how DeChambeau’s vast fanbase and online popularity—his YouTube following of over 1.6 million surpasses even the PGA Tour’s—could bring fresh energy to the Indian golf scene.

Rahul Singh, Head of the International Series, hinted at ongoing discussions: "India holds an essential place on the Asian Tour, and LIV Golf’s expansion makes it a natural choice for the International Series." If successful, the event will follow close on the heels of the Hero Indian Open, a key DP World Tour event slated for March, making it an exciting two-month period for golf in India.

With early-year constraints like shorter daylight hours, the field size is expected to be capped at 120, compared to the Hero Indian Open's 144. Similar scheduling has proven successful before, as seen with the International Series Oman, which preceded LIV Golf Jeddah in 2024 and attracted top names like Chile’s Joaquin Niemann and Louis Oosthuizen’s Stingers GC.

The upcoming International Series India promises to be a landmark event, bringing together world-class talent and elevating India’s place on the global golf stage.

As the International Series India draws closer, the anticipation is palpable. For Indian golf fans, this event signifies more than just a tournament—it’s a historic moment that showcases the country's potential as a world-class golf destination. With Major champions like Bryson DeChambeau expected to compete, the event promises to inspire a new generation of Indian golfers and spark renewed interest in the sport across the nation.
