Jesse Grewal, set to receive the Dronacharya Award in the lifetime category for outstanding coaches in sports and games in 2023, has an impressive coaching career. He served as the coach for the Indian golf team at the 2023 Asian Games, where Aditi Ashok secured a silver medal. Additionally, Grewal led the Indian men’s golf team in the 2008 and 2012 Eisenhower Trophy, also known as the World Cup of Golf.
Having played in PGA of India tournaments for two years before transitioning into the golf teaching profession, Grewal's coaching journey has been marked by notable achievements. He is the second recipient of the Dronacharya Award from Chandigarh, following former cricket coach Desh Prem Azad, who coached the legendary India captain Kapil Dev.
Acknowledging the honor, Grewal expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am really honored to receive this award and am elated that the government has acknowledged the sport of golf for this recognition. Being awarded in the lifetime category, considering 20 years of coaching, is truly fortunate. I have dedicated 33 years of my life to this beautiful sport and am now looking forward to aiming for medals in golf at the 2024 Paris Olympics.”
Grewal highlighted the overwhelming response golf has received, particularly in Chandigarh, which he described as a golfing nursery. He emphasized the city's role in producing top-class golfers and noted the keen interest the young generation is showing in the sport.
As the Director of the National Golf Academy of India (NGAI) since 2008 at the Chandigarh Golf Association (CGA) Range, Grewal has played a pivotal role in the sport's development. He was part of the founding teaching staff when the Education and Certification course commenced at the range in 2004. Over 500 teaching professionals have been certified by the NGAI. Grewal emphasized the need for a strong base of coaches in India to further promote the sport while continuing to teach golf to aspiring players.
