A New Era or a Dangerous Rift? IGPL’s Entry Splits Indian Golf Community

A seismic shift has hit Indian golf.

In what’s being dubbed India’s LIV Golf moment, the newly launched Indian Golf Players League (IGPL) is turning the professional golf landscape on its head—offering INR 20 to INR 40 lakh contracts1–2% equity, and now, confirmed Asian Tour qualification to its top players.

This bold move has led to immediate backlash from the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), which responded by banning over 30 players allegedly involved with IGPL.

But this battle isn’t just about money—it's about power, legacy, and the future of Indian golf.

Kapil Dev vs Yuvraj Singh: Two Icons, Two Visions

At the heart of this growing rift are two legends of Indian sport.
Kapil Dev, President of PGTI, is defending the established tour that has nurtured India’s golfing talent for over two decades. On the other side, cricket superstar Yuvraj Singh has emerged as the face of IGPL, championing a modern, aggressive, player-first approach to the sport.

And the tension is palpable.

“It’s not just a league—it’s a statement,” says a source close to one of the banned players. “For the first time, we’re being treated like professionals off the course too.”

Asian Tour Access & Women’s Golf Revolution

Adding fuel to the fire, IGPL has confirmed that its top players will now be eligible to qualify for the Asian Tour—a game-changing development that places the league on a global pathway. Previously, that route was closely tied to PGTI performances.

Even more groundbreaking is IGPL’s approach to women’s golf.

In most WGAI (Women's Golf Association of India) events, the winner takes home around INR 1.3 lakh. But in IGPL, even the last-placed female golfer will earn INR 2 lakh, ensuring a minimum reward that far surpasses existing standards.

The Future of Indian Golf: Division or Evolution?

While the IGPL movement is gaining traction, questions loom large.

  • Will this parallel league fragment Indian professional golf?

  • Can both tours coexist—or is one destined to fade out?

  • Will Kapil Dev counter with reforms inside PGTI to retain player trust?

The lines are drawn. The power struggle has begun.
