A bogey-free start for Louis Oosthuizen lifted him on the clubhouse lead with 6 under par 64 at the 149th Open held at Royal St. George’s Golf Club.

The Champion Golfer of the Year 2010, Louis Oosthuizen opened the golf world to amazement with seven successive pars on Thursday. With perplexing birdies at eight, nine and ten followed by a massive three at 13, 14 and 16; the South African player brought in a whole new level of energy to the course.

Surpassing the crowned jewels of Jordan Spieth and Brian Harman at 5 under par 65, Oosthuizen was thrilled to climb up the highest on the scoreboard ladder.

"(It was) probably in my mind the perfect round I could have played,” said Oosthuizen, “I didn't make many mistakes. When I had good opportunities for birdies, I made the putts. So yeah, just a very good solid round."

In the last two majors, the PGA Championship and the US Open, Oosthuizen has closed at the runner’s up position hence, the magnificent fine form at the Open is nothing out of the ordinary.

"I think in both of those (the PGA and U.S. Open) I was beaten by better golf at the end there. You have to get over it quickly, otherwise, it's going to hold you back to perform again."

Along with the glorifying wonders of the South African player, the Rainbow Nation has brought in 13 players to the course, three of which, namely Dylan Frittelli and Justin Harding along with Oosthuizen close in the top 10 on Day 1.

Shane Lowry with Louis Oosthuizen.

Amidst the new age golf outshining the 2021 Open Championship, the Defending Champion - Shane Lowry, made four birdies and five bogeys, including one on the 18th, in an opening round of 71 to sit at +1 heading into Friday. With a luck in strike moment at the 12th, the Irishman wasn’t very convinced on his play on the first day of the Open.

"I'd say I played pretty average, I didn't play my best golf,” explained Lowry. “But then again, you're playing with Louis who's shooting six-under and playing great. It kind of makes you feel a little bit different."

Amidst the hustle of Day 1, Jon Rahm - the US Open winner is playing 1 over par 71 while the PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson is still trying to catch up from 10 over par 80.
