Things did not go as planned for India’s Anirban Lahiri as he failed to make the cut at the PGA Championship. On Day 1, Lahiri returned a three-over 73 that placed him Tied 78th at the Southern Hills.

TULSA: The day had started with some momentous names making their presence felt at the leaderboard but as the day progressed some momentous games finished it. Will Zalatoris, 25, sits at 9-under par atop the leaderboard. He recorded zero bogeys and five birdies, four of them coming on the Back 9. Zalatoris converted 18 putts from 10 feet or shorter in his second round. He's searching for his first win on the PGA Tour.

He is one shot clear of Chile’s Mito Pereira, who also is looking for his first PGA Tour title. He is playing in just his second major. Pereira, who grew up playing with Joaquin Niemann, added a 64 in the second round to his 68 in the first.

WOODS MAKES CUT AFTER A STRONG ROUND

After an opening-round, 4-over 74 at the PGA Championship, Tiger Woods needed a strong second round at Southern Hills to advance to weekend competition.

The 15-time major championship winner did just that on Friday afternoon, carding a 1-under 69 in increasingly calm conditions in Oklahoma, posting a 36-hole total of 3-over 143 and making the cut with a stroke to spare. Woods made the turn at even-par 35, making seven pars in addition to a birdie at the par-5 fifth and bogey at the par-3 eighth.

A birdie at the par-4 10th appeared to give him some breathing room in regard to the cut line, but he found trouble with a double bogey at the par-3 11th, falling outside the projected cut line in the process. The 46-year-old rallied, though, demonstrating the mental fortitude that has always been apparent throughout his illustrious career. He played bogey-free coming in, adding birdies at the par-5 13th and staunch par-4 16th.

RORY FALTERS IN THE SECOND ROUND

There's no getting around it: at the same time many of his competitors were using the lack of wind to go low, the first-round leader of the PGA Championship was content to make pars. Rory McIlroy carded a 1-over 71 on Friday, a score that would have been good for the first 1.5 days of this championship but did not size up in the afternoon wave. As a result, McIlroy is 4-under going into the weekend, five shots behind leader Will Zalatoris and with multiple names in between them.

BUBBA WATSONS SETS RECORD

Bubba Watson matched the lowest round in PGA Championship history and climbed into contention during the second round at Southern Hills.

Watson shot an opening 72 that left him well off anyone's radar, but he began to pick up steam Friday with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4 and 5 and another at the ninth. Watson added five more birdies on the back side, giving him nine for the round. He had a chance to shoot 62 but missed a 23-footer for birdie on the par-4 18th.

HOW DID OTHER STARS FARE?

Former world number one Dustin Johnson and current occupant Scottie Scheffler missed the cut after both slumped to six over par - Scheffler after inexplicably dropping two shots on his final hole.

Open champion Collin Morikawa also endured a tricky morning and he faced a nervy wait after finishing at four over, while Spaniard Jon Rahm heads into the weekend at two over par after a one-under 69.
