August 16: 1999

 

Tiger Woods outflanks 19-year-old Sergio Garcia to clinch the PGA Championship

 

 

 

The 1999 PGA Championship at Medinah featured the clash of the titans: Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia.  Woods, at that time, was already making waves and had won his first major at the 1997 Masters Tournament where he outclassed the rest of the field finishing with -18. And he created a record of sorts. 19-year-old Sergio Garcia was a rising star but impressed Golf fans with his game and grit.

 

 

August 15, 1993

 

Paul Azinger clinches the PGA Championship title in a playoff over Greg Norman

 

 

 

This was probably the most memorable moment for Paul Azinger. The day saw Azinger winning his only major championship in a sudden death playoff at the PGA Championship at Inverness Club. After shooting rounds of 69-66-69-68 for a 272 total it was good enough to match the third round leader, Greg Norman for a playoff.  Azinger beat Norman in an interesting way to create history.

 

 

August 14, 1998

 

Jeff Sluman created impact by winning the 70^th PGA Championship

 

 

Only a few would have predicted that America’s Jeff Sluman would grab the US PGA trophy at the Oak Tree Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma. He outclassed Paul Azinger and won the first tournament of his professional career.

 

His win meant that for the seventh consecutive week, the US tour had a first-time professional winner, and Sluman became the 17th different golfer to have won a major in the last 17 events.
