Dustin Johnson slipped out from OWGR top-50

LIV Golf

For the first time in 13 years, the critical OWGR category has seen a fall out of the two-time champion, Dustin Johnson who dropped out of the top -50. This top-50 status apparently describes how many golfers qualify for the four majors.

However, Dustin’s major status remains unchanged. He has a guaranteed spot in the masters for life as he has won in 2020 at Augusta National and he has a few years remaining in the US Open after earning a 10-year exemption for his 2016 victory at Oakmont. He also got entry into the Open Championship and PGA Championship through 2024 which is only possible if both PGA and Open championship follow the model of Augusta and the USGA and they don’t proscribe LIV golfers from keeping the exemptions they’ve earlier earned in their game.

LIV Golf has made Dustin Johnson earn quite a mind-altering earnings of around $38 million during his first year of playing with LIV, but unfortunately this has made him lose his ranking in the Official World Golf Ranking since then. His ranking has been dropped officially for the first time since January 2010.

He defended his position of World No. 1 for 135 weeks and became the third longest player to maintain his position since the OWGR's inception in 1986. Now he is standing at 51st spot  in OWGR. J.T. Poston is the new No. 50, replacing Johnson. The last time Johnson was this low was when he was ranked No. 55 in January 2010.

Dustin has seen his world ranking dropping soon after playing in two Official World Golf Ranking sanctioned tournaments, in comparison to this , Scottie Scheffler who is currently ranked as World No. 1 has played in 14 tournaments.

Due to some injury, Dustin Johnson has to take his name down from the Saudi International on the Asian Tour as he was all set to make his first start of the season where he is a two-time champion.

He will next play in Mexico in a 14-event LIV Golf League of $405M, which is still yet to receive world ranking points. Next he will be seen in The Masters, an OWGR-sanctioned tournament at Augusta National which may even lower down his rankings than he currently has as he is missing many events during this time span. Due to his appearance in the LIV Golf he is banned from playing PGA Tour events which ensures his absence from Genesis Invitational, Riviera this week.

His fellow American and LIV star Bryson DeChambeau fell out of the world's top 100 last week, too, as players signed to the Saudi-backed series continue to fall in the rankings.
