Rory McIlroy began the last round at the WGC-Mexico Championship four strokes back, and he completed his week at Chapultepec Golf Club in a similar spot.
McIlroy, who drove by two strokes after a first-cycle 65, battled on Chapultepec's greens and completed fifth for his second sequential top-5 completion. Not unreasonably his consistency was an absolute comfort for the Northern Irishman.
“Frustrating. I don't feel like I got the best out of myself,” McIlroy said following a final-round 68. “Obviously started the week well, and then I hit some loose shots, and I didn't putt as well as I needed to over the last three days. I just let a few shots get away.”
Those debating on either side of golf's distance arguments might pause for seven days with the PGA Tour down at Club de Golf Chapultepec. Almost at 8,000 feet above altitude, the aces are hitting some gigantic shots, and we're inclined to seeing some colossal tee shots to make the perfectionists contending for a golf rollback flinch.
Rory McIlroy has entered on the twelfth opening on Saturday. The 412-yard hole plays rather straight away. On the scorecard, it would appear that an ordinary standard 4. But Rory has displayed the enthralling effects of his tee shots…striking it hole high with a driver blast. Although Chapultepec has witnessed several driver blasts in the past, this has created an unforgettable memory for everyone.
