November 13th 2010, Singapore: Australian Adam Scott maintained his bid for a third victory at the Barclays Singapore Open by shooting a third round two-under-par 69 at the Barclays Singapore Open on Saturday.
Scott, who won the tournament in 2005 and 2006, posted four birdies against two bogeys for a three-day total of 14-under-par 199 to open up a one shot lead at the Sentosa Golf Club.
Title holder Ian Poulter of England posted a 68 to share second place with unheralded Kang Kyung-nam (67) of Korea on a 200 total at the US$6 million event co sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
Ryder Cup star Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland stayed in touch with the leader following a 68 for a 201 total while Anders Hansen of Denmark produced the lowest third round score of 65 to lie in fifth place.
Asian Tour members Prayad Marksaeng of Thailand and Rikard Karlberg of Sweden took a share of seventh place on matching 204s, five strokes behind Scott.
Scott posted two birdies and one bogey in his opening four holes and added another birdie on hole seven before turning in 34 with a one stroke lead. He dropped a shot on the 10th hole to lose the lead to Poulter but recovered with a birdie on hole 16.
“It wasn’t easy out there today. It was hot and it was a long round and I wasn’t feeling on top of a lot of aspects of my game at times but I am just happy to have got back to the clubhouse with 69 which is always a good score,” said Scott.
He was disappointed to miss his birdie putt on the 18th hole from 15 feet as that would have extended his lead. However, the popular Australian remained optimistic of his chances tomorrow.
“One more would have been nice but two shots is nothing, you saw that today. I had a two shot lead and it was gone on the fourth and I was one under. Two shots or one shot is not a big lead. I’m happy to be out in front and hopefully one stroke will be enough for me,” he added.
The flamboyant Poulter, ranked 15th in the world, birdied the second hole but added an eagle three on hole four. He looked set on maintaining his lead after making birdie on hole 10 but wobbled with a bogey on the 14th hole.
“I played real solid where I had one blemish but Adam played well as well so I think tomorrow is going to be a great day,” said the nine-time winner on the European Tour.
He expects a thrilling finale with no more than six players including Ryder Cup teammate McDowell still in contention.
“It is tight on the leaderboard with world class players and we got a number of guys behind us. It is going to be an interesting Sunday,” added Poulter who won the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship earlier in the year.
McDowell, who finished tied fifth last year, endured a quiet front nine with one birdie and mixed his card in his homeward nine with three birdies against one bogey.
“I’m happy with the position that I’m in going into the final round on Sunday. It’s a golf course that I like. I enjoy playing on the Serapong course as it’s a tough one and you’ve got to drive the ball well,” said McDowell, ranked 10th in the world.
“The boys were obviously making an impact especially with Scott and Poulter having a bit of a tussle behind and hopefully I can get into the mix tomorrow. It’s a great leaderboard here and Barclays has put on a great event for us and they always produce great winners. I’m going to go out there tomorrow and do my job,” added McDowell.
