Asian Tour

Good memories coming back to Malaysia?
I’ve played well here (He won the Malaysian Open in 2003 and 2008). I always enjoy it. Today I didn’t enjoy as much. But it’s just the first round. The course is in good shape. The greens are rolling really nice. There’s no wind, it’s pretty easy right now.

What held you back?
My body is not reacting as it normally does because of the jetlag but I should be okay tomorrow. I’m really happy I shot three under as I hit it awful. Hit it miserably bad. If I aimed left, I hit it left. If I aimed right I hit it right. There was no fade or draw. It was a good scramble.

What do you remember about this course?
The drivable par four, the 15th, I hit it eight feet, six feet and 10 feet in the first three days (of the Malaysian Open in 2003). It’s good memories to have when you’re playing on this course. 18 as well as I chipped in there (on the last day). A lot of good memories.

Winning on the PGA Tour must change your life a bit?
The scheduling becomes easier. I don’t have to think about which places I’m going to play next year. My life is still the same. I just know and can plan to play tournaments that I like.

How do you attribute the breakthrough?
I’ve played well this whole year. My scoring average was sixty nine point something which is fourth in America. I get my stats, they don’t have them on the tour as I didn’t meet enough tournaments on the PGA Tour. I’ve been striking it really well, doing everything well. I wasn’t too surprised when I won.

With your PGA Tour card locked in, will you still play elsewhere?
At the end of the year, like this. I like to support India definitely. And also the Asian Tour as this was where I learned to play and make the cuts and stuff like that.

What helped turned the game around?
My coach, Dale Lynch. He’s been really good for me. It’s been over a year now. We started at Greensboro last year. It’s been really good. I still have a long way to go to get the techniques all down but I’m on the right path. I always work on my whole game. I needed to make a couple of changes to get the swing more consistent. I won’t say it’s all there but it’s gotten better this year.

Where do you see your career going from here?
I’ll just try to win as many tournaments as I can. I’m 37 now. I’ve got a few good years left in me. I know the way my career has always been, it’s taken me a while to win on any Tour. It took me from 1995 to 1999 to win on the Asian Tour, four years. Same thing in Europe. With the PGA Tour win, the next time I’m in contention, it becomes a lot easier. I don’t see why I won’t win multiple times.

How about winning Majors?
Why not? I know it’s tougher but it’s another tournament. You’re playing the same players. You need to have one week and I know I won’t be scared when I’m in contention.
