Day 2
Day 1

September 19th 2009, Gurgaon: Gaganjeet Bhullar returned a three under 69 in the third round of the Aircel-PGTI’s DLF Masters 2009 to hold on to the lead on a day of intense competition. Bhullar’s third round effort ensured he ended the day at 11 under 205, one stroke ahead of Jyoti Randhawa, who fired a brilliant 67 on day three. Shamim Khan and Digvijay Singh are tied for third at eight under 208.

Gaganjeet Bhullar (68, 68, 69) took a while before he could come into his own on day three. He was one over after six holes, having missed a short putt for par on the fifth. Bhullar then picked up three birdies on the seventh, ninth and 11th to turn on the heat on Jyoti Randhawa, who had grabbed the lead by then.

The Kapurthala lad made bogey on the 12th but came roaring back with great approach shots on the 13th and 15th to produce two invaluable birdies. While on the 13th his lob wedge approach came up six feet short of the cup, on the 15th he had a similar result with his approach shot from the right rough. He closed with a bogey-birdie on the last two holes to snatch the lead from Randhawa.

“I hit some really good approach shots today. But my overall performance was not as good as yesterday. I’m quite disappointed about missing some short putts. Jyoti had a great round considering the pin positions were very tough today. I’m now looking forward to an interesting contest on the final day. I feel confident of posting a good score in round four as I have been able to achieve this on many previous occasions this season,” said Bhullar.

Jyoti Randhawa (71, 68, 67) came out firing on all cylinders on Saturday as he birdied the third, fourth, fifth and seventh to make the turn at four under. He then went past Bhullar and Shamim Khan’s score and took the lead with an incredible eagle-birdie run on the 10th and 11th. On the par four 10th, Randhawa used his pitching wedge to great effect from the right rough. He holed the shot from 125 yards out.

The former Asia no. 1 then stumbled with a double bogey on the 12th as a result of his tee shot going out of bounds. A birdie followed on the 13th before an ordinary approach shot on the 15th led to another bogey. He thus conceded the lead to Bhullar at the end of the day.

Randhawa said, “I was a little more aggressive today as compared to the previous two rounds. I started off well but then had an up and down back nine. The eagle on the 10th was highlight of the day for me. However, the double bogey on the 12th changed the course of my round. I could have easily made par on that hole had I not hit it out of bounds.

“Nonetheless, I’m happy to be just one shot off the lead at this stage and a keen contest between Bhullar, myself and a few others on the final day augurs well for Indian golf.”

Shamim Khan’s round of 69 and Digvijay Singh’s 71 placed these two golfers in a share of third place at eight under 208.

Nepal’s Toran Bikram Shahi and Ashok Kumar are tied fifth at six under 210 while SSP Chowrasia and Yusuf Ali share seventh place with identical totals of five under 211.

Shiv Kapur lies tied 12th at one under 215.

In the team championship, the team of Ali Sher, Anthony Choat and amateur Ankur Chadha won the competition with a net score of 15 under 129. The team of Digvijay Singh, Gaganjeet Bhullar and amateur He Calvin Eu finished second with a net score of 12 under 132.
