GOLF & BETTING : Whats the real story?

image
Posted by Dinesh Thakur 25 Aug 2011

The story is simple. Like any other sport that we play, the intention is to make it interesting, heart pounding, and increase the level of anxiety by way of uncertainty. It happens to us in horse racing, Stock market, Diwali card sessions … etc. Golf is no different. Infact, at least in Golf there is a percentage to your ability as well. Whether it is 50 bucks a hole or a multiple of a same number, golfers enjoy the calculations, discussions, oscillation of emotions and the winnings/ losses after the 18th hole. It enhances the tone and the mood of the winners. Infact, I have noticed that many a times, my family is able to identify that I have come home as a winner (Even if being a winner means that you have paid more than your winnings for the Beer and snacks at the 19th hole).

Have you ever imagined the world without… if I may use the word, BETTING? It would be no different to a wilder beast shaking his head across the African safari looking for grass and hoping in hell not to become the Lions' meal. Therefore, Betting is one of the things which differentiates us from the animals, ofcourse besides SEX!.. ;-)

So here is the point, why can we not bet on professional golfers and at the time of the game? Why is it illegal? In India, we live in a hypocritical environment …. Betting and prostitution are both illegal, whereas stock markets and horse racing are legal.  However we live and breathe in the middle of it. Which leads to low quality and mis-management in both the fields. I say, betting should be legalised … and may be, it should be taxed as well  …. Just the way it works at the stock market. If  nothing else, a lot of non-golfers will start watching and following the game. If the Brits can do it …. Why can’t we? Your thoughts?... :-)
