What It’s Like to Be the Only Golfer in Your Friend Circle?

image
Posted by Aksh Gupta 26 Sep 2025

Golfers in India know this feeling all too well: you’re out with friends or colleagues, and the moment you bring up golf, the room goes quiet. Someone asks, “So… what’s your handicap again?” while others smile vaguely, with no real clue about the sport you love.

Being the only golfer in your circle isn’t just about playing a different game — it’s about living a different lifestyle. Early morning tee-times, discipline, etiquette, and strategy often clash with the late-night party culture most people around you follow. Add to that the stereotypes — that golf is for retirees, the wealthy, or people with “too much free time.”

And yet, golf gives us something special: identity, pride, and the chance to represent a sport that is global, aspirational, and deeply strategic.

Sometimes, being the lone golfer means you become the ambassador of the sport in your world — the one introducing colleagues or friends to a round, sparking curiosity, or even inspiring someone to pick up a club for the first time.

So let’s talk about it:

  • Have you ever felt like the “odd one out” as the only golfer in your group of friends or colleagues?

  • Do you find it frustrating to constantly explain golf terms, rules, or even why you wake up at 5:00 a.m. for a tee time?

  • How do you deal with stereotypes about golf being an “elitist” or “boring” game?

  • Or, do you wear it like a badge of honor — proud to stand out and carry the sport into conversations where it’s rarely discussed?

  • Have you managed to convert any friends into golfers because of your passion?

Share your stories, frustrations, funny moments, and the pride of being “the golfer” in your circle. Who knows — your journey might inspire someone else here to see the joy in standing out!
