“Hello Yasir, my name is Jimmy Dunne. I'm a member of the Tour policy board. I'd like the opportunity for a call and hopefully a visit.”

This was Jimmy Dunne’s  whatsapp message  to Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund few days back the big announcement of the merger

Wonder what does this mean? And why did Jimmy Dunne want to meet the governor?

Well, the news is all around the golf world, “ A shocking collaboration between PGA Tour and LIV or it is more right to say PIF

Now, who is this man- Jimmy Dunne?

Jimmy Dunne

Well currently,Jimmy Dunne is the vice chairman and senior managing principal at Piper Sandler, a financial services company.

He is also a member of the board of directors of the PGA since 1990. Dunne is a member at a number of notable golf clubs, such as National Golf Links on LongI sland, Pine Valley, and the prestigious Augusta National.

Dunne has been directly involved in golf for many years. His passion for golf made him a famous personality in the golf industry where he has strong connections among some big players and other golf men.

In late 2022, Dune received an invitation to serve as an independent director on the PGA Tour Policy Board. Ed Herlihy, the chairman of the PGA Tour, put forth the nomination. The fact that Dunne was appointed to the PGA Tour Policy Board is evidence of the rising significance of the finance sector to golf.

How is he related to the PGA Tour and LIV Golf merger?

The PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) came together thanks in large part to Jimmy Dunne. He was one of the limited few who were aware of the alliance before it was publicized, and he was the one who informed Rory McIlroy. Although Dunne was adamantly opposed to LIV Golf, he could see the advantages of working with the PIF. In his opinion, the alliance may "unify" golf and increase its popularity among fans all over the world.

According to Monahan, “They were able to have a discussion about how we work together to grow the game, how we work together to grow the PGA Tour, and to really get an understanding and start building some trust as we pursued that. The first conversation, that I was not a part of, was the most important. When they came back and said it was a positive conversation and that I should have a follow-up meeting, that's when things started to develop.”

Dunne's involvement in the collaboration is evidence of his sway in the golf industry. He is a well-known individual with a comprehensive knowledge of the game. He is a skillful negotiator who helped the PGA Tour and the PIF develop a relationship of trust. Golf has benefited from the relationship, and Dunne deserves praise for his part in making it happen.

Why was Jimmy Dunne critical about LIV Golf?

The LIV Golf Invitational Series, a new golf league supported by Saudi Arabia, has drawn a lot of criticism from Jimmy Dunne.

"A threat to the game of golf" and is "being used as a vehicle to sportswash" the Saudi Arabian government were the words of Dunne.

The LIV Golf Invitational Series, according to Dunne, will "dilute the talent pool" on the PGA Tour. It will be harder for other players to compete, he claims, because the league is "cherry-picking" the finest players in the globe. He also strongly criticized the LIV format for lacking the element of meritocracy that makes golf such a fantastic sport. Even further, Dunne prohibited LIV participants from competing in the yearly Seminole Pro-Member tournament.

Jimmy Dunne’s past stance on Saudi Arabia :

In the 9/11 attacks, Dunne lost 66 friends and coworkers. Given the Saudi Arabian government's record on human rights, he has stated that he is "deeply troubled" by the fact that it participates in golf.

Dunne has further expressed his worry over the Saudi Arabian government's use of golf to "sportswash" its image.

According to Dunne, he is "concerned that the Saudi Arabian government is using golf to distract from its human rights abuses.”

Dunne believes that playing golf on September 11, 2001, saved his life. On that terrible day, Dunne wasn't in the office working in the South Tower of the World Trade Center; instead, he was out competing in the U.S. Mid-Amateur. He lost a lot of his close friends and coworkers on that fateful day.

Reactions to Dunne's position on Saudi Arabia and golf have been divided. For speaking out against the Saudi Arabian administration, Dunne has received appreciation from some. Some have called Dunne "unpatriotic" and accused him of "jeopardizing the future of golf.” It's probable that Dunne's opinions on Saudi Arabia and golf will continue to stir some debate.

Yasir Al Rumayyan

Dunne's involvement in the PGA Tour - PIF partnership showcased his influential role in golf. He was privy to the details of this collaboration, emphasizing his knowledge and connections. Known for his straightforward approach, Dunne reportedly had a productive initial conversation with PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, discussing the growth and unification of golf. This pivotal conversation set the foundation for subsequent meetings and the development of the partnership. Interestingly, Dunne had previously criticized Al-Rumayyan's remarks about a $54 million prize for a 54-shot round, deeming it more of an exhibition. Despite his previous stance against working with the Saudis, Dunne's involvement with them now marks a significant distinction.

It is still an open ended thing, what’s the actual scenario for this new golf regime? Is it the money which is making people change their opinions or it is really in the name of the honor of golf.
