The course, funded by the PGA TOUR and created on Deane R. Beman's initial idea, was constructed in 1980 to serve as the permanent home for THE PLAYERS Championship. As the first true Stadium Course, it was built to enhance the overall on-site fan experience. Commissioner Deane Beman, working with the well-known golf course architect Pete Dye, created a course that favored no one style of play; it was a truly balanced layout. The island green at the par-3, 17th hole, is one of the most recognized in golf, while the course continues to receive accolades as among the best in the world.
