Rahul is abs right. I paid 31% overall and another 10% for customs clearence agent's fee in bangalore.
suresh thats the basic rate of duty there are cess etc that will come up . duty is on CNF value so your effective rate becomes approx 31% on the FOB value . there is no duty exemption if these goods are coming in as part of trade .

Depends how big the equipments are, whether the import is by sea or air as the freight component is involved that does make a difference. Duty is charged on the invoice value of the goods which again depends on country of origin of the goods. Machines from China are a shade cheaper resulting in lesser duty. Total customs duty structure works out to around 28% of the invoice value plus freight. Other charges involved are of clearing agents, air cargo handling, etc.
I have imported some golf related products (clubs, shoes etc.) from Japan several timesby EMS. Every time, it was required to pay almost 35% of invoice amount. In my understanding, import duty up to certain amount of invoice amount should be exempted but it is unclear in actual application...
