The Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) has announced a significant change in its leadership, appointing veteran golfer Amandeep Johl as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective January 1, 2025. This strategic appointment marks a new chapter for PGTI as it aims to further its growth and strengthen its standing in the Indian and international golf scene.

Johl’s appointment comes shortly after another major leadership move, with cricket legend Kapil Dev stepping in as President of PGTI earlier this year. Kapil Dev welcomed Johl’s new role, emphasizing the importance of having a leader deeply rooted in the sport. “Amandeep’s extensive experience on the Indian and Asian circuits, spanning over three decades, makes him a natural choice for this position. We are entering an exciting phase for Indian golf, and with Amandeep at the helm, PGTI is poised for even greater achievements,” said Dev.

Johl succeeds Uttam Singh Mundy, a pivotal figure who has been with PGTI since its inception and has played a key role in shaping the organization into India’s premier professional golf tour. Reflecting on his tenure, Mundy expressed confidence in his successor, stating, “Amandeep’s passion and expertise make him the ideal candidate to lead PGTI forward. It has been an incredible journey, and I am happy to pass the baton to someone with such a deep commitment to the game.” During his 18-year tenure as CEO of PGTI, Uttam Singh Mundy played a transformative role in shaping Indian professional golf. He was instrumental in expanding the PGTI calendar, increasing the number of tournaments and prize purses, and forging strategic partnerships with international tours. Mundy’s efforts brought global recognition to Indian golfers, facilitated the emergence of new talent through developmental programs, and boosted the financial viability of the tour. His leadership, especially during challenging times like the pandemic, ensured PGTI’s steady growth, cementing its status as India’s premier professional golf circuit.

Amandeep Johl, 55, brings with him a wealth of experience. An accomplished player, he made his mark in Indian golf as early as 1985, debuting with the junior Indian team before clinching the National Amateur Championship in 1989. Over the years, Johl has not only excelled on the Asian and European Tours but has also contributed as a national coach, PGTI board member, and a founding member of the Asian Tour in 2004.

In his new role, Johl is expected to guide PGTI through a transformative period, building on the solid foundation laid by Mundy. “It’s an honor to take on this responsibility. Uttam has been a driving force behind PGTI’s success, and I have big shoes to fill. I look forward to continuing his legacy and taking PGTI to new heights,” said Johl, who holds a degree in mechanical engineering.

Johl’s appointment marks the beginning of a transition phase, with him assisting Mundy through the remainder of 2024 to ensure a smooth handover. As PGTI gears up for the next season, all eyes will be on Johl as he leads the organization into a new era, backed by his extensive experience and unwavering passion for the sport.

The transition signals a new era for PGTI, as the organization seeks to capitalize on the growing popularity of golf in India, driven by strong leadership and a vision to expand its influence both domestically and internationally. With Kapil Dev and Amandeep Johl at the forefront, the future of Indian professional golf looks promising.
