About me: A former cricketer, Currently a Golf instructor, Strength and Conditioning specialist, Golf biomechanist, Corrective exercise coach.
Being a cricketer, what inspired me to take Golf
My father being a very old member of RCGC, I took to Golf when I was just four. But since I was a left-hander, I was left club-less once I outgrew the only iron (incidentally a 4 iron) my dad managed from somewhere for me. In the mid-seventies, it was impossible to get a left-handed set in India. I soon lost interest in Golf and concentrated on cricket instead. After a long sabbatical, I got back to my first love.
On my rapport with Saurav Ganguly
I do share a great rapport with Saurav Ganguly. Actually, it was Saurav who persuaded me to become a fitness trainer. He encouraged me to change my career pretty late in my life and had it not been him, I would probably have been doing something else in life.
On making Golf popular among kids
To make the sport popular, we need more ranges and kids should have access to golf clubs through a school programme. Currently, it’s too much of a member-based sport now. It’s imperative to shed this country club image to make the sport more popular among the masses. Pro touch is doing a great job trying to make golf popular among non-member kids. They have introduced inter-school competition and also made it possible for many underprivileged children to play the sport.
One thing I would like to change about Golf
Undoubtedly, the speed of play. That’s a pet peeve. The average member takes too long, walks too slow and spends far too much time on the ball.
