Delhi's golf course fate up for public vote

Did you know there is a golf course in north of Delhi, near Bhalswa Lake called Bhalswa Golf Course?

The 100-acre Bhalswa Golf Course being developed by Delhi Development Authority (DDA) since 2003 started as a 3-hole course and was later expanded into the current nine-hole setup. Future plans were to make it a proper 18-hole golf course.

In the current turn of events, major media houses have published that the future of the facility has been put to public vote. The DDA is now reaching out to the people through public notices seeking their suggestions on the utility of the sprawling green space. They will continue this exercise till June 28.

However, it is worth noting that the Bhalswa Golf Course project and its development never kicked into second gear where it could have been marketed to the right audience of surrounding colonies, the likes of Model Town, Civil Lines, Rohini and other posh colonies of North Delhi.

A few takes can be summarized as:-

• The quality of the grounds was not improved enough.

• The golf course was not marketed correctly to the golfers residing in North Delhi.

• The golf course could have been used to conduct camps for the schools in nearby areas.

The view portrayed by other publishers of Burari, Bhalswa Village and Azadpur not producing golfers is not entirely correct. Also, being the second public course in Delhi (first being Qutab Golf Course), access to the golf course is open to all.

If Bhalswa Golf Course is developed and brought up to the level of Qutab Golf Course by the DDA, the plus points of it would be:-

• Generate employment and economic benefits in the region as a requirement for caddies, ground maintenance staff, etc. increases.

• Increase in tourism within the area.

• Unless proper facilities are available, exposure to the game of golf across the masses declines. Thereby, chances of unearthing hidden talent are missed out on.

• As an ecological benefit, the damaged lands can actually be restored or improved by running a golf course over it.
