The Indian Golf Union elections at Qutab Golf Course took place on 24th December 2022 in accordance with the directive from the ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Indian Olympic Association in observance of the National Sports Development Code 2011 for the post of president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer along nine governing council members including one female.
An interference issue was raised by the private club representatives against the Army officials who seemed to have an upper hand in the administrative activities at the courses and in the Indian Golf Union.

There are majorly 31 State Golf Associations which are included in the IGU’s Electoral College which are ultimately directed by Army clubs or their top officials from any of the states which is a part of the electoral College which is unfair according to the laws of IGU.
It also clearly mentions that only amateurs will be permitted to be the part of its governing council which further doesn’t give a chance to deserving sportsperson to be a part of the governing body such as Anirban Lahairi and Aditi Ashok who represented the country in Olympics won’t be taken into consideration to be the part of the core council.
Army officers posted in one state are representing another in the Electoral College which is unprincipled. There are many officers who stay in one state but are representing other states, which is again unethical to allow them to be a part of the electoral process, as Lt. Gen. (retd) Asit Mistry is based in Gujarat but is representing Madhya Pradesh. Lt. Gen. Basant Kumar Repswal is based in Bangalore but is representing the same state as Mr. Mistry.
To this extent, the International Golf Federation and the R&A have renewed their guidelines stating to involve professionals to represent the country in multi-nation events. But in the case of IGU and its council to be expected to follow the sports Code, there are at least six officers of Lieutenant General rank who have not clearly mentioned their particulars in the Electoral College list, even though everyone knows the force personnel are very much sensitive about their ranks.
Now After the election day, there are civilians in the 13-member governing council from the private golf clubs. Including Maharashtra State Golf Association's Brijinder Singh as President. Farzan Heerjee, representing Jharkhand Golf Society, was elected as the vice-president. Golf Karnataka's Harish Kumar Shetty is on the podium as secretary and UP Golf Society's Sanjeev Rattan won as the treasurer.
SK Sharma, president of Chandigarh Golf Association has been elected as the governing council member of the Indian Golf Union (IGU) for the period of two years from 2022 to 2024. The results were declared after the casting of votes by 61 representatives from 31 state golf associations. Sharma was elected with a maximum number of votes, that is, 55 votes out of 61.
Simar Jeet Singh, Jayant Tagore, Shashank Sandu, Navita Mansingh, R Shyam Sundar, Nagesh Singh, Gaurav Bajaj and Sundeep Verma are the other members of the new 13-member governing council.
There is something which has been into the great lights with legendary athlete P.T.Usha was selected as the president of the Indian Olympics Association on 10th December, this could have made an aggressive hike in the number of representation of women in a federation’s electoral college and meritorious sportspersons' appointment in the athletes' council or executive council, but this was also not happening.
It is believed that the new governing council will take the necessary steps involving the IGU’s rules and regulations.
