This Week in History: It’s Throwback Thursday and we bring you an interesting compilation of the significant moments that took place in this week in the history of Golf.

 

August 30, 1967

 

Jack Nicklaus wins the Westchester Classic by defeating Arnold Palmer

 

Former American professional Jack Nicklaus, also nicknamed as the Golden Bear, announced his arrival in the Golfing circuit when he defeated Golf legend Arnold Palmer to grab the inaugural Westchester Classic title in 1967.

Golf belonged to Palmer, also called Arnie, when the younger and dashing Nicklaus arrived for the crown and the crowd. The crowd — dubbed as Arnie’s Army — couldn’t stand him because of it.

 

Nicklaus came away from the 1st Westchester Classic victorious claiming a $50,000 first place check in the process.  This brought his season earnings to $156,748 making it the fifth he hit over the $100,000 marker.

The rivalry between the Golf legends, spanning over half a century on and off the Golf course, was one of the fiercest in the sports landscape with Nicklaus winning 18 Majors and Palmer seven. Though they were great competitors on the greens, they shared a great camaraderie off the course.

 

 

August 27, 1995

 

Greg Norman wins the World Series of Golf (WSOG)

 

Australian Professional Golfer Greg Norman, also known as The Shark, is often remembered for his epic collapses.  The Golf legend, who won 91 international tournaments, including 20 PGA Tour tournaments and two majors, sank a 66- foot chip shot on the 1st playoff hole to win the WSOG in 1995.

He, Nick Price, & Billy Mayfair were all in a playoff. Both Norman and Price were the best Golfers in the world at the time and it was sure that any of them would reign supreme. Norman opted to finish the tournament without a putt by holing out a 60-foot chip shot.  Mayfair and Price both missed their birdie putts and the title was Normans.

Today, the Golf veteran, who is also an entrepreneur, is one of the richest Golfers.
