Golf legend Tiger Woods has announced the passing of his mother, Kultida Woods, at the age of 80. In a heartfelt statement on social media, Woods expressed his deep sorrow, calling her his "biggest fan and greatest supporter." Her passing marks a profound personal loss for the 15-time major champion, who credited his mother for much of his success.
Born in Thailand in 1944, Kultida Woods was of Thai, Chinese, and Dutch descent. She met Tiger’s father, Earl Woods, while working as a civilian secretary in Bangkok, and the two married in 1969. The couple moved to the United States, where they raised their only child, Eldrick "Tiger" Woods.
Kultida played a crucial role in shaping Tiger’s character and discipline. While his father, Earl, introduced him to golf, Tiger has often said that his mother was the true enforcer in the household. "My mom was the one who kept me in line," he once revealed. Her influence extended beyond discipline—she instilled in him resilience, focus, and an unwavering drive to succeed.
Tiger Woods shared a deeply emotional tribute to his mother, saying, "My Mom was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable. She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter, and without her, none of my personal achievements would have been possible."
Kultida was a familiar face at Tiger’s tournaments, always seen supporting him from the sidelines. She was present at some of the most iconic moments of his career, including his 2019 Masters victory, where he ended an 11-year major title drought. Her pride in her son was evident as she cheered him on through triumphs and stood by him through challenges.
Beyond being Tiger Woods' mother, Kultida was known for her philanthropic efforts, particularly in Thailand. She worked on numerous charitable initiatives, reflecting her deep commitment to giving back to her roots. Her legacy will live on not just in Tiger’s continued success but also in the values she instilled in him and the impact she had on those around her.
Kultida is survived by her son, Tiger, and her grandchildren, Sam and Charlie. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time. While her passing leaves a void in the golfing world and in the life of one of the sport’s greatest icons, her influence and spirit will forever be a part of Tiger Woods’ journey.
