LIV Golf Drops Ranking Bid After OWGR Rejection

LIV Golf has decided to withdraw its request for players to earn world ranking points. LIV Golf first applied for recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), which plays a key role in determining entry into golf’s four majors, in July 2022 but was rejected last October.

LIV Golf gives up on ranking attempt.

Greg Norman, the CEO of LIV Golf, wrote a letter to the members explaining the situation. He mentioned that despite their efforts, OWGR didn't want to collaborate with them.

The OWGR had some concerns about LIV Golf's tournaments, particularly the format and the number of players. The OWGR said the circuit’s 54-hole, no-cut events for 48 players were an issue, but that they were capable of being managed through an “appropriate mathematical formula.”

Norman believes that the current ranking system favours players who regularly participate in PGA Tour events. He thinks there should be a fairer ranking system that acknowledges the changes happening in golf. He also expressed his commitment to ensuring that LIV Golf players have opportunities to compete in major tournaments.

Although qualified LIV players have been allowed to play in major events, there's a concern that they might miss out in the future if they don't earn world ranking points.

Currently, there are four LIV players in the top 50 world rankings, including Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton. Joaquin Niemann, a LIV player, recently received a special invitation to compete in the Masters tournament due to his impressive performance.

LIV Golf's season will resume this week at the Hong Kong Golf Club.
