Beware, Golfers: What You Need to Know About IndiGo Airlines’ GOLF BAG Policy

Travelling with your golf set can sometimes feel more stressful than playing 18 holes under pressure. If you are planning to fly with IndiGo Airlines, here is something every golfer should know before booking their tickets.

The Sports Equipment Handling Charge

IndiGo charges a flat INR 2,500 as sports equipment handling fee for golf bags. This is separate from your regular check-in baggage allowance.

How It Works in Practice

  • Every passenger gets 15 kg of check-in baggage.

  • Suppose your golf bag weighs 15 kg. That is already one check-in item, but because it is a golf bag, you must pay INR 2,500 extra.

  • Now, if you also carry a regular check-in suitcase, that is an additional item. Together, the charges can add up quickly.

Your golf bag weight counts within the 15kg check-in allowance—plus an extra INR 2,500 handling fee.

Here is a quick example:

  • Golf bag (15 kg) → INR 2,500 handling fee

  • Regular check-in bag (15 kg) → included in ticket, but weight limits apply, So You need to pay an Extra Charge as your 15kg Limit is exhausted by your Golf Bag only

  • Exceed weight or add another bag → extra charges apply

  • Total extra cost: up to INR 7,000 just to carry your golf set between cities.

The Group Travel Surprise

Many golfers travel in groups, expecting to balance luggage among themselves. Unfortunately, IndiGo does not allow splitting or pooling baggage.

  • Example: Golfer A has 10 kg, Golfer B has 20 kg. Together, they are at 30 kg, well within the 2-person limit of 30 kg.

  • However, IndiGo looks at each passenger individually. That means Golfer B still pays for the extra 5 kg plus the INR 2,500 golf bag fee.

So, for a group of 4 golfers, each carrying golf sets, the additional cost can go as high as INR 10,000 or more.

Why This Matters

Most other airlines do not charge such a separate handling fee for golf bags. Many golfers are unaware of IndiGo’s policy until they are at the airport counter, where they have no choice but to pay.

The Takeaway

We are not here to criticize the airline. These are their rules, and as travelers, we must follow them. But it is important for golfers to be aware before booking tickets.

So, the next time you are flying with your clubs:
1.  Factor in the extra cost.
2.  Check if another airline gives you a better deal.
3. Avoid last-minute surprises at the check-in counter.

Because in golf, as in travel, the fewer penalties you take, the better your scorecard looks!
